Question of the Week: Ootheca

Last week the question was:  What is this?

This is a praying mantis ootheca (egg case).  An ootheca can contain as many as 300 mantis eggs is made of a frothy secretion that hardens to protect the eggs.  Once the eggs hatch, if the little mantids don’t disperse and find prey quickly, they will begin to cannibalize each other.  For more info, check out this page.
