This is a Hessian fly pupa. Hessian flies can be a serious pest in wheat. The warm winter we had this past year could have contributed to their development, though there are a number of other potential factors. This is a good reminder to growers to use varieties with good resistance to Hessian fly. Here is a great publication with more information.
