Question of the Week: Smut

Last week the question was:  What is growing on this corn leaf?

This is corn smut.  This is a fungus that can show up in higher incidences following periods of heat stress, so its a little odd that this plant was found recently.  It may have overwintered on crop residue.  Corn smut usually much to worry about.  Varietal resistance and crop rotation are the best methods of control.  Take a look at this APS page for more info.
