Question of the Week: Flea Beetle

Last week the question was:  What is this insect on this sweet potato leaf?

This is the pigweed flea beetle (Disonycha glabrata).  It looks very similar to the striped cucumber beetle but you can distinguish them by looking at the hind legs.  The pigweed flea beetle has thick, powerful hind legs used for jumping while the spotted cucumber beetle has thin hind legs used for walking.  Flea beetles are foliage feeders that leave lots of little holes in leaves as they feed.  Check out this publication for more info on flea beetles.
